In the city of Eldra, people are ruled by ancient prophecies. For centuries, the high council has stayed in power by virtue of the prophecies of the elder seers. After the last infallible prophecy came to pass, growing unrest led to murders and an eventual rebellion that raged for more than a decade. In the present day, Cassa, the orphaned daughter of rebels, is determined to fight back against the high council, which governs Eldra from behind the walls of the citadel. Her only allies are no-nonsense Alys, easygoing Evander, and perpetually underestimated Newt, and Cassa struggles to come to terms with the legacy of rebellion her dead parents have left her — and the fear that she may be inadequate to shoulder the burden. But by the time Cassa and her friends uncover the mystery of the final infallible prophecy, it may be too late to save the city — or themselves. – synopsis from Goodreads
“We bend, but we don’t break.”
This is just my kind of story. A small crew made up of misfits and rebels trying to bring down a system. From the first time I heard about this book I knew I needed to read it and that it would end up being a five stars rating. Guys! I don’t know why this book is not more talked about than it is, it’s absolutely amazing.
Personally I really appreciated that this story was in a third person narrative, it is my preferred type. I feels it gave a bit more depth to the story to be told from an outside perspective, it paints a broader picture for me. It is still a multiple point of view though so don’t worry, you will get to enjoy the thoughts of all the primary characters.
What characters they are, so so good. You can really see the human nature in them, the flaws and the hope of trying to make a better world. I just couldn’t stop rooting for them and wanted them to pull through at every turn. There are some pretty strong personas in this book but I think my favourtite was the most quiet of them all, Newt. Newt is strong without being imposing. His backstory is heartbreaking. He has this sweetness and stillness about him that I appreciated in the mix of very opinionated characters. I’m not going to say a lot about this but there is a romance in this book that i just live for (Squeeeee). I kept wanting the characters to get it on, lol. There’s a diversity in these characters that I really appreciated and it wasn’t forced either, felt very organic/authentic. Just in the LGBTQIA+ rep we get three, which is bloody brilliant. Plus there is a character that battles mental illness and it is shown in a way that you can really relate to, that is believable.
Beneath the Citadel has everything you want from a great standalone (it could always change, we’ve seen standalones become series before). The pacing is just right, you get a good story from end to finish and it’s not rushed or stretched out. I kind of wanted more but am pretty content with it being over with just one book. Destiny Soria’s style is absolutely fab. Her world building is amazing, she really made me feel like I was there with the characters. And hello that cover, Yow’zah! It is dropdead gorgeous and so fitting to the story it holds.
If you haven’t picked this one up yet, what are you waiting for!!!! I will definitely be following Destiny’s future books. I can’t wait for our Live Chat with her in the group. This book just started my 2019 reading journey on a big high.
