Our Favorite Holiday Films/Specials

We felt like doing something different for this post today and instead of focusing on books, we are going to be talking about our favorite Christmas films/specials that we love watching year after year.

I mostly watch Christmas specials every year.  Ones that I waited impatiently for every year, when I was little, to come on television.  Those are the ones that have the most special place in my heart.

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (1966)
No, not the new one and not the Carrey version! I’m sorry but I’m so in love with the original that the others ones don’t hold a candle to it.  I watch it every single year.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)
This is probably my all-time favorite Christmas special.  I love Rankin/Bass stuff and this is fantastic.  I just love the stop motion animation in this one and I mean how can you not fall in love with these misfits?

Garfield’s Christmas (1987)
Garfield was basically my everything as a child.  I watched the Saturday morning cartoon and read every comic I would get my hands on.  This is still one of my favorites and it’s surprising a really touching special.

The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (1985)
I know that basically no one will have a clue what this one is.  It’s a very underrated hidden gem in the Rankin/Bass collection and I’m so happy that I discovered it as a child on television.  This is actually a Pegan story and you have fae, wizards, trolls, and all kinds of cool creatures.  Still one of my all-time favorites and thankfully I got a copy on DVD because this is NOT an easy find.

Black Christmas (1974)
As a horror fiend, I just had to put something on here and I’m going with Black Christmas.  This is one of the first slasher films, it predates Halloween and When a Stranger Calls but you can see the films took lots of inspiration from this one.  It’s a very unsettling film that any major horror fan needs to see.  Don’t get it mixed up with the remake though!

Honorable Mentions: Krampus, A Nightmare Before Christmas, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, Charlie Brown’s Christmas, and Home Alone.

Love Actually
Every year I have to watch this one. It’s so much fun and touching.  Holy Hole in a Doughnut, have you seen how many amazing actors are in this one?

The Muppet Christmas Carol
I’ve said this before, I love A Christmas Carol. I’ve read the book, seen pretty much every movie that is inspired by it but my fav rendition still is The Muppet Christmas Carol, don’t ask me why.

The Nightmare before Christmas
I watch this one on Halloween, I watch it on Christmas, hell I watch it year round. It’s so much fun and I love the songs.

Asterix cartoon
I live in Quebec and one thing we have every year during December here is on a french channel they show at the same time every day animated movies. But not like Disney movies, more like Tin Tin, Lucky Luke and Asterix. My favourite has always been Asterix, I love the humour of it in the comics as well as the movies. So for me these have a lot of nostalgia and I look forward every year to sitting in front of the TV and watching them.

Edward Scissorhands
This might not be a Christmas movie per se but I love it none the less. Tim Burton has always been one of my favourite movie director. Granted his movies in the last couple of years have not been up to par with the rest of his body of work, I still hope for him to go back to his old self, lol. I think this one is so magical and is all I want from a Tim Burton movie.

Did we mention any of your favorites in this list? If not, what are some of the ones you love watching around the holiday season?
