A lush gothic fantasy about monsters and magic, set on the banks of a cursed lake. Perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and Brigid Kemmerer.

There are monsters in the world.

When Violeta Graceling arrives at haunted Lakesedge estate, she expects to find a monster. She knows the terrifying rumors about Rowan Sylvanan, who drowned his entire family when he was a boy. But neither the estate nor the monster are what they seem.

There are monsters in the woods.

As Leta falls for Rowan, she discovers he is bound to the Lord Under, the sinister death god lurking in the black waters of the lake. A creature to whom Leta is inexplicably drawn…

There’s a monster in the shadows, and now it knows my name.

Now, to save Rowan—and herself—Leta must confront the darkness in her past, including unraveling the mystery of her connection to the Lord Under.

Congratulations on your debut novel! Will you be doing anything to celebrate the release of Lakesedge?

I’m having a virtual launch with the wonderful Erin A. Craig! Since I’m in Australia, I won’t be able to go into stores to see my book, but I hope people will send me lots of photos of it in the wild because I am SO excited to see LAKESEDGE on shelves. Also, my birthday is in the same week as the release, so I will be having a double celebration of both things with my family.

Lakesedge sounds incredible.  Can you tell us something about the book that we might not know from looking at the synopsis?

LAKESEDGE is overall a romance, but it also explores life in the aftermath of grief. Particularly how it feels to go on after immeasurable loss, and how both family—and found family—can provide a sense of belonging in an uncertain world.

Oh my god! The Lakesedge cover is one of my favorites this year – it really gives me all those beautiful, dark gothic vibes.  What did you think when you saw the cover and did you have any say at all in creating it?

I am so in love with the cover! It is completely perfect and captures the heart of the book so well. I love how it’s reminiscent of pulp gothic novels, horror movies, and the romantic fantasy books I read in the 1990s. I did have a little bit of input via sending an inspiration board of images to my publisher, and Rich Deas, the designer, came up with the concept.

Can we expect a lot of romance in this novel?

Yes! Romance is one of my favourite things to read – and write. LAKESEDGE is a very small-stakes, character driven novel, and the romance between Violeta and Rowan forms a large part of the plot. It was so fun to write and I hope readers will enjoy watching their relationship develop throughout the book.

What would you say was the hardest part of writing Lakesedge?

How the book is out in the world and now belongs to readers, instead of being just mine. It was very hard to let go! But I love how a story that I dreamed up can now be part of the lives of so many people. It’s a little bit magical…

Are you a big fan of dark gothic fantasy novels or movies? Do you have any recommendations?

Yes, I adore dark gothic fantasy books and movies. Some of my favourites movies include: Crimson Peak, The Lodgers, The VVitch, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Crow, and The Field Guide to Evil. My all -time favourite gothic books are: Lost Souls by Poppy Z. Brite, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by April G. Tucholke, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson.
