I know I’m late, late, late but I still want to do this! Last year I failed on a lot of my goals but this year I’m completely determined to get a bunch done. I’m also going to be keeping it realistic and not killing myself with insane long lists of stuff that I have to read. I find that the second I make lists of too much, I rebel instantly and am like, “you can’t make me!” It’s a whole scene – let’s not talk about it LOL Alright, so what bookish goals am I aiming for this year? Let’s get into them!
Work on Backlist Finished Duologies/Series
I had a big list last year and it threw me. This year, I’m not going to make a list of what duologies and series I want to get done but I do want a decent number knocked out. To help me reach this goal, I’ve started back up a feature in the TBR and Beyond Facebook Group called Buddy Read with Mel. It’s basically a very casual group chat read along with me, where we pick a duology or series and read through it and chat while we do it. Super laid back and it’s worked out really well so far. If you want in on something like this – just head on over to the group and look out for it.
I know our first series reads will be Vicious Duology by V.E. Schwab, Warcross Duology by Marlie Lu and Wayward Series by Seanan McGuire (exception to the rule about finished series).
I plan on checking in at least a couple times to show my progress with this.
Not Request As Many ARCS
I know the allure of arcs is strong but honestly I find it kind of a lot of pressure sometimes. It’s a lot of deadlines and I never get my own purchased books done, so I’m going to try and not listen to the arc’s siren call this year. I know I will read a few, but I don’t expect to be drowning in them.
Note: I wrote this in January, I’m already failing LOL
Read Six Backlist Owlcrate Books
I know a lot of you just smiled and nodded at this one. Yep, tons of us get monthly sub boxes and haven’t read even half the books we get from them. I don’t want to set my goal too high or I’ll ditch it. I just want to actually read some and not feel so guilty when I look at the list of OC books. I have thought about which ones I intend to read and right now I’m thinking:
Winterwood by Shea Ernshaw, The Hearts We Sold by Emily Llloyd Jones, My Plain Jane (How have I not read this yet?!?!) by Brodi Ashton, Cynitha Hand and Jodie Meadows, Sandcastle Empire by Kalya Olson, Four Dead Queens by Astrid Scholte and The Bones House by Emily Lloyd-Jones.
This list is tenative and maybe I’ll even get to more than that – who knows. Have you read any of these? Like them them? Hate them? Let me know!
Hopefully I can do a check-in of this, or maybe OC books in general when I get this goal done.
Don’t Start New Series!
This is a huge one and one I tried and failed frequently at last year. I read way too many first books of brand new series and then I have to read them over again the next year, so I can remember everything. It’s a bit of a pain honestly. I will be reading a few new starts for series but I’ll be really picky about it.
I’m terrible at this. I order stuff left and right and I’m sure that won’t slow down too too much but I’d like to slow down on some of the stuff that I know I won’t get to for a long time or that I’m only sort of interested in. I can wait for sales or Bookoutlet on that stuff. I will still be supporting tons of authors and still buying my favorites when they come out. It’s just that I want to be a little pickier at the stuff I grab on a regular basis. Nothing major.
I do this every year, but I thought I’d throw this in here anyway since it’s so important. It’s incredible to me how lucky we are to be getting more and more diverse and interesting stories each year.
That’s about it! I think it’s pretty doable – I’m sure I’ll fall off some places but I’m going to stay positive and hope for the best in my reading year! Do you have any reading goals this year?
