Top Ten Tuesday #37: Cover Redesigns We Loved/Hated

top ten tuesday

Hey guys! It’s time for Top Ten Tuesday, which is currently being run by the lovely Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl.  We knew instantly that we wanted to take part in this weekly meme because both of us love making list, so this is perfect!

This week’s (August 5th, 2019) topic is: Cover Redesigns We Loved and Hated.  Melanie will do cover redesigns she hates and Mir will do ones she loved! Giving a little taste of both worlds this week!

(Cover Redesigns I HATED)

There are some really nice cover changes – I’m not hating on all or anything.  However,   most cover changes do nothing but frustrate me because they are usually a mid-series cover change and then I don’t have matching covers and I like everything pretty.  I’m shallow like that.  Here are the ones that bugged/disappointed me the most.

The Dark Days Club (Lady Helen #1) by Alison Goodman
What even? The first cover is stunning and gothic and just LOOK AT IT.   Why the hell did they resign it to a basic stock image looking cover? I don’t understand! I haven’t read this yet but it certainly turned me off when they had a mid-series cover change and I had already bought the first book *side eye*

House of Furies (House of Furies #1) by Madeline Roux
I know that the redesign isn’t awful and I probably would’ve liked it – had it been the first one out.  However, it wasn’t.  The stunning blue gothic looking beauty was first released and the photo doesn’t do it justice and we were SUPPOSED to get a beautiful bold red to go with it next.  How great would that look on a shelf? Sigh.  I have read the first book and really enjoyed it and have since bought the second one in the resdesign, but I waited till it was on Bookoutlet.

The Diviners (The Diviners #1) by Libba Bray
There have been a couple different cover changes on this one and I’ve hated each one.  Look at the beauty that is the first cover – how freaking cool is that?!?!? I don’t even want to talk about the purple one – some pearls – la de da…

Defy the Stars (Constellation #1) by Claudia Grey
What the what? Why would you do that? The first one is breathtaking and it’s even more so in-person.  The second one is UGLY and cringey – I’m sorry if you like it but I’m mad at this cover LOL I paid full price for the first book in hardcover and then they went and changed the damn cover.  I hope whoever did it, stubs their toe – hard!

Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely
This one almost makes me laugh because it’s just so bad.  Thankfully, this is just a stand-alone so you can still go buy the beautiful hardcover version.  Look at that pretty pink! The book is super fun – don’t let the weird redesigned cover put you off.  I don’t know what they were thinking – it doesn’t go with the story AT ALL.  Ugh!

(Cover Redesigns I LOVED)

I agree that there are some terrible cover changes out there, but there are occasionally some good ones that I feel are necessary or bring so much more to the books. These are the fives I felt that were good choices.
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
I’m so happy they decided to change the cover on this series. I mean even if I don’t really get the design on the new ones, the first one had me so confused. Is she going to the prom or getting married? It doesn’t scream kickass girl that can whoop your arse to me.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas
After reading Throne of Glass, I can seriously say I don’t see Celaena in the first cover. It’s so generic and doesn’t have any of the essence that Celaena has. So glad they decided to change these and give us a cover that embodies that character.

Flamecaster by Cinda Williams Chima
Listen, the first cover was beautiful but the cover change with the girl and fire in the back for me is so badass. This cover makes me want to read this book.

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renée Ahdieh
When I first saw the cover for this book I was like Wow! this is such a pretty cover. But then… they came out with the new designs and BANG! I love this. It’s so fitting and gorgeous. Just stunning.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell
You know me I never miss a chance to talk about Carry On. OMG! the cover change on this one. I absolutely adore that we get to see my babies. So fashionable. Can’t wait to get Wayward Son and put them next to each other.

  1. I am not a fan of the midseries change!

Totally agree about The Dark Days Club. Wow! That first one is SO much better! Also Gunslinger Girl- that first one all the way.

Shatter Me- oh my gosh the second one is so superior. Same w/ Throne of Glass. And that second Flamecaster cover IS awesome!

  2. Never read the Shatter Me books, but do think the redesigns seem a bit improvement! Same story goes for the TOG books (although isn’t the newest in a different style?). Gunslinger Girl is definitely best in its original design!! Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland.

  3. I was going to list Defy the Stars for my cover changes I didn’t like, but I was so mad about the ones I had already listed I completely forgot about it. 😂 Great lists, ladies!

  4. I hated the Flamecaster cover change because to me they just like like TOG wannabe covers which shows even better when the TOG cover is right above it in your post.
I really like both desgins of TWATD. Both really have something.

  5. I’m really bitter with the Dark Days Club cover because the first one is so so much better! I also don’t like that of Gunslinger Girl.

I love the redesign of Shatter Me, Throne of Glass, The Wrath and The Dawn and Flamecaster! I also think HOF redesign is more scary because of the color and that woman at the middle.

  6. I agree with all of them! Except maybe the wrath and the dawn, I think I like the original better, but the new one isn’t that bad!

  7. Totally agree about the dark days club, love the books but the British covers aren’t much better- they retain that original typography (now in gold) but oil painting-like figures 😕 would’ve preferred something a little more abstract.

  8. Yeah, I don’t like mid-series cover changes either. I think publishers should keep the covers consistent and matching. Once a series is finished, I don’t mind them republishing everything with a different cover theme, though. Just let me have my first editions that look like they belong together. 🙂

  9. I agree, cover changes midway through series is really frustrating. The Ember in the Ashes series is the one that springs to mind to me.

  10. Great list! Midway cover changes are sooo annoying — why do they do that?! Although some of them are nice, yes, but that’s totally not the point lol I really like the original design for House of Furies (although I’d never heard of that book or seen it’s cover until this challenge!) and that Gunslinger Girl cover redesign is… ouch!
