Hey guys! It’s time for Top Ten Tuesday, which is currently being run by the lovely Jana over at That Artsy Reader Girl. We knew instantly that we wanted to take part in this weekly meme because both of us love making list, so this is perfect!
This week’s (March 28th, 2019) topic is: Audio Freebie. However, since Mireille has some posts about audio books – we are going to switch the topic to: Popular Books that Lived Up to the Hype.
Since there are two of us running this blog (Melanie and Mireille), we’re going to break these memes up between us and each pick five!
Illuminae by Amie Kauffman and Jay Kristoff
I saw everyone raving about this pretty early on when I joined the online book community and grabbed it. It was super out of my comfort zone and I was pretty skeptical but I ended up loving it and it’s one of my all-time favorite series!
Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
I’m not a huge fan of the whole series but the first book was amazing and I LOVE The Darkling #sorrynotsorry
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
This was one of the books that really sucked me back into YA once I joined the online YA book community again. I had been away from YA mostly for years but I just adore this series and my main man Lucien! #trashformaas
Wicked Saints by Emily A Duncan
This hasn’t even been released yet but the hype is real! I was lucky enough to get my hands on an arc of this book and was blown away. Blood magic and a cleric who can talk to the gods? Yes please!
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
This book deserves all the hype it gets plus more. It’s one of the most important books of our era and I really hope schools are teaching this or will in the future. Nothing less than brilliant.
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
Well I didn’t really doubt this one, I was pretty sure i would like it. It’s now one of my Holy Grail of books.
The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
This is another one that I wasn’t sure what to expect and I know that it’s a very polarized series but I really enjoyed this book. I do need to continue the series but I am excited for it.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
I wasn’t sure what to expect as this was my first HOlly Black book, but honestly I now understand why she is named the Fae Queen.
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi
I really wasnt’t sure that I would love this one, having heard it is very romance heavy. But I liked it a lot and really happy I read it. #teamwarner.
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
I got to say I was curious to see what the fuss was about with this series and boy was I not disappointed. I’m not absolute trash for Maas.
I love how you both picked ACoTaR! I’ve been worried about picking it up…maybe I should take the plunge now? And also I’ve been seriously considering picking up a Holly Black book for years (I was going to read Tithe way back when), but The Cruel Prince has really made me consider it again. Here’s my post for the week: https://clockworkbibliotheca.blogspot.com/2019/03/ttt-songs-that-tell-incredible-stories.html

I really enjoyed the Illuminae series (especially Gemina- my favorite of the three) and I can’t wait to get to the cruel Prince.

I wasn’t sure about reading another Holly Black book, but The Cruel Prince completely won me over! 😊

I was the same with Illuminae. I bought the whole trilogy ’cause I wanted to try it (and it was part of the 3 for £10 paperback deal on Amazon) but I was scared of it. I think it was both because of the scary format and because it was Sci-Fi, both waaaaaaay out of my comfort zone and usual reading habits.
But it was literally amazing and is definitely one of my favourite series EVER!
I’ve just started reading The Raven Boys today! So far I’m enjoying it, something about Maggie Stiefvaters’ writing is just captivating!
Happy Reading guys! ❤

Ah I’m so excited that you loved Illuminae – I’m always buying complete series without trying any first lol So worth it sometimes though – I adored that series so much!

I loved The Raven Boys and Six of Crows, but ACOTAR and Shadow and Bone didn’t quite live up to the hype for me.

I’ve only read THUG, It’s an amazing book. I’ve been reading On the Come Up for about 3 months now (I got an early copy) and I’m struggling. I’m not much of a rap music fan unfortunately.

Aw that is too bad. I’m not a rap music fan either but I did really enjoy On the Come Up. I’m sorry it’s not working for you. THUG is incredible though, I agree!

I’ve read a couple of these and I’m horrible with hyped books. People love and rave about them and then I read them and feel like there’s something wrong with me because I don’t feel the same. Now I usually let the hype die down before I pick them up. I’ve read ACOTAR, The Hate U Give and The Cruel Prince and enjoyed them all.

Aw no, there are lots I don’t like. I mostly just read whatever looks good to me – regardless if it’s getting crazy hype or not. There are tons I haven’t read but these ones all worked for me completely!

I really want to read both Six of Crows and The Hate U Give. Oddly enough, I picked up The Cruel Prince in audio a couple months ago during one of Audible’s 2-for-1 sales. Haha.
This is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

I haven’t read Wicked Saints yet, but other than ACOTAR (just not a fan), I would say I agree that these books lived up to the hype. Hard to pick a favorite. 🙂

I think Maas is kind of a love her or hate her kind of author lol I’m glad you enjoy the others though!

I’m glad Wicked Saints lived up to the hype for you too! I loved it, it was everything I wanted. And I agree, Shadow and Bone was the best book in the trilogy (I liked the other two too, but I had some issues with them that I didn’t have in the beginning.)
Great list!

YESS, TO ALL OF THESE! I always get so nervous about books that are hyped, because taste is so subjective, but I really enjoyed a lot of these too! I am so excited for Wicked Saints. Great picks!

It’s super subjective. I don’t read or not read books because of hype. I just read books based off if they sound good to me. I really hope you enjoy Wicked Saints though – so much fun!

Six of Crows somehow EXCEEDED the hype. I didn’t think it would be as incredible as it was.

Despite the hype, I never did read anything by Tahereh Mafi. But with the new interest in her books (because of the sequels/follow up books), perhaps I need to take a look. I also REALLY need to read Six of Crows. SOMEDAY. 😀
Thanks so much for the Finding Wonderland visit last week.
