SNOW WHITE – this book (like the movie) started it all
Favourite debut book from an author

34726469

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

OK this one was so hard for me to pick, so many amazing debuts this year. But I’m going to go with Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young. This was one of our group reads for TBR and Beyond and I absolutely loved it. The world building was amazing it hooked me right from the start. Can’t wait for her second novel.

CINDERELLA – a diamond in the rough
Just like Cinderella, you didn’t expect much out of this character in the
beginning, but they turned out to be a total gem

18584855

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Catherine took me by surprised. I don’t know what I expected from her at the beginning, but I know I got more than anything I could’ve imagined. This was my second book by Marissa Meyer, the only other one I’ve read was Cinder and I was a bit underwhelmed by it. So, I had certain apprehensions for this one. I thought Catherine was a well-rounded character that really gave me a sense of who the infamous Queen of Hearts could’ve been at a young age.

AURORA – sleeping beauty
A book that makes you sleepy or could not hold your attention

33158561

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore

This is my only DNF in the last two years. I couldn’t focus on it, I never knew what was happening, it just wasn’t for me. The writing is beautiful though I must say that, but I felt like there was no story. I had to put it away with the promise to maybe, and I say maybe very loosely, come back to it later.

ARIEL – under the sea
A book with a water/ocean setting

36502054 (1)

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

This book is perfect for this category being that it is an Ursula retelling/origin story. Sea Witch was beautifully written and almost felt more like an historical fiction than a fantasy book. I’m a huge fan of Ursula so even though she didn’t have the sass that we know and love, I still really enjoyed this one.

BELLE – beauty and the books
Name a book with the best bookworm/book lover

16068905

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

I probably could have chosen a million characters for this one, but my fav is Cather from Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I just adored her and related to her so much. Also, her and Levi are relationship goals.

JASMINE – the thief and the princess
Name a book with an unlikely love story (either in terms of romance or a book
you didn’t expect to love so much)

13455782

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

I really expected to dislike this book so much, I’ve heard so many mixed reviews about it but I ended up really loving the series. Sure it’s a bit wishy washy, but I do think that Juliet’s character is relatable and I absolutely loved how she went from this scared little thing to a force to be reckoned with.

POCAHONTAS – the real life princess
Name a book that is based on a real life person you want to read/have read

17851885

I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

I want so badly to read Malala’s biography. I find her to be such an inspiration. I am setting it as a goal for 2019.

MULAN – the princess that saved her country
Name the fiercest heroine you know

26114463

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

This one is easy, Mia Corvere. No heroine kicks more butts than Mia. You have all this power and strength all bunched up in this tiny girl. Is it September 2019 yet? I need Darkdawn like yesterday!!!

.

TIANA – the princess with the coolest and most diverse crew
Name a diverse book, whether it is a diverse set of characters or just diverse in general

34728667

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Children of Blood and Bone was one of my top reads this year. It was such a brilliant book and so refreshing to have a fantasy story inspired by African/Nigerian myths. The world building in this one enraptured me from the start, I just can’t wait for
the second book to come out.

RAPUNZEL – let your long hair down
Name the longest book you’ve ever read

23766634

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas

I’m going to say probably A Court of Wings and Ruin which is 705 pages. I have books bigger than that but just haven’t gotten to them yet.

MERIDA – I determine my own fate
A book where there is no love story/interest

40642172

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

The one that comes to mind is This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab. It’s, I think, one of the first times I noticed that there was no romantic element to a book and it was really refreshing. Just two characters creating a bond based on real friendship and nothing else.

ANNA & ELSA – frozen hearts
A book in a winter/cold setting

17399160

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

A bit on the nose with this as the word snow is in the title but still I will stand by my choice. Though a bit predictable, I sill enjoyed Snow Like Ashes. It was a lot of fun and the world building is very interesting.

MOANA – how far »I’ll go
A character that goes on a journey

6101718

The Magicians by Lev Grossman

I love everything about this series, the characters, the writing, the plot, everything!!!  There are a lot of mixed reviews about this one but it’s one of my favourites. Some say that Quentin isn’t a likable character but I strongly disagree. I think he is flawed and very human. He searches a lot for who he is and where he belongs and I think that is very relatable. He will go very far on his journey to uncover who he is and what he is capable of.

Now the fun begins, I tag:

Kristi @confessionsofayareader

Felicia @bookishlyslytherclaw

Candyce and Isabelle @thebookduchesses

Heather @youngatheartreader

Brianna @theboundlessbookshelf

Virgina @thesassylibraryfox

Don’t feel pressured to do the tag but it’s a fun one! Also, if I didn’t tag you but you want to do the tag then please considered yourself tagged!

  1. Omigosh, YES to Sky in the Deep. That is totally my favorite debut of the year as well. Can’t wait for the companion coming out! I totally agree about Sea Witch as well. It certainly read far more like a historical fiction story than deep fantasty, but I was super into it. I enjoyed reading your answers, and I’m so glad you did the tag! 😀 Great post! 🙂
